The Schools Division of Batangas City in its ardent desire to unmistakably support the presidential proclamation on literacy week celebration, held a one-day event highlighting the theme, “ALS: Kadluan ng kaalaman, daan tungo sa maunlad na pamayanan.” This great endeavor aimed at generating awareness and appreciation of various initiatives on implementing literacy programs and projects among educators, learners, stakeholders, and community.
Taking into account the role of education in eradicating illiteracy, the ALS implementers in the city division headed by Mr. Nestor E. Alon, Division ALS Focal Person together with Dr. Meniano D. Ebora and Mrs. Elizabeth M. Alea, Education Program Specialists II for Alternative Learning System (EPSA) planned, organized, and conducted Division ALS Literacy Day at Batangas City Convention Center on September 22, 2018.
The day of the celebration was filled with various meaningful activities which revealed the abysmal concerns and interest of the advocates in realizing the goal of Alternative Learning System in a transforming the lives of the clientele. A successful entrepreneur, Mrs. Yolanda Briones talked about Financial Literacy during a symposium as the activity conducted in the first hour. The open forum on the aforementioned topic provided the ALS teachers and learners with the avenue to raise questions on how they can improve their life status through proper management of finances and augmenting the source of their income.
Another activity conducted right after the symposium was the competition of learners in showcasing their skills and talents particularly in nail care and table skirting. These contests were facilitated by Mr. Maximo Barte and Mrs. Joan Irish Macatangay, and other Mobile Teachers in the schools division. Likewise, a group of ALS teachers administered a Quiz Bee among ALS learners who had been qualified during the elimination round. As winners of the contest were recognized for their worth and talents, barangay officials were also acknowledged by issuing them the certificate of recognition for their contribution as DepEd partners in implementing the ALS programs and projects which greatly helped the target beneficiaries.
In the last part of the celebration, the moment was vivified by the glamorous beauty of the candidates for Ms. ALS 2018 during their coronation. All the audience and invited guests formally witnessed the presentation of the candidates’ gowns with their stunning beauties. Truly, the literacy day celebration has become a very significant undertaking towards strengthening the schools division’s advocacy to implement literacy programs that are responsive to the needs of individual learners.
